An atypical outing: dare an inner adventure!

The Grottes de la Balme (La Balme Cave) in Northern Isère invite you to spend a 100% natural moment in the heart of an underground landscape shaped by water and the incredible history of erosion.
On a self-guided or guided tour (allow 1h15), discover the inner treasures of this listed natural site: an amphitheater of small pools, an underground lake, labyrinths, concretions and draperies make up the landscape of the caves. From the majestic porch through a maze of galleries to a magnificent hall with cathedral-like volumes, discover a breathtaking natural site where emotions and sensations grow with every visit.

With a constant temperature of between 12 and 15 degrees, the Grottes de la Balme are a refreshing place to explore in summer, temperate in autumn and ideal for rainy days!

Exceptional wildlife

A favorite environment for bats, the underground world offers the chance to observe this small animal, depending on the season. At Grottes de La Balme (La Balme Cave), bats roam freely, and one of the underground galleries is reserved for them. Educational panels provide a wealth of information on these incredible mammals. Up to 21 species have been recorded here.

Situated in the Espace Naturel Sensible “Les coteaux de Saint-Roch”, a 2.7 km loop on a signposted path offers the chance to observe the flora that flourishes here. Discover the forest, the cliffs, the dry grasslands, and so many varieties of protected wildflowers. A discovery booklet will guide you to better understand the diversity of this natural environment. A breathtaking panorama stretching from the Rhône to the Alps awaits you at the highest point!

Events 2024

On the occasion of International Tourist Caves Day, experience an incredible moment on June 8 and 9 with a zip-line crossing of the caves’ porch (reservation required, places limited).

Since February 2024, a new fun tour experience has been available for children and teenagers: “Archibalme’s Investigation”. Armed with a booklet-game, they investigate the heart of the Grottes and become detectives in search of stolen loot. Available all year round, except during special events and guided tours.

The must-see Balmoween takes place on October 29, 30 and 31: a chilling adventure on a Victorian Gothic theme.
